What Is BSIFF?
The Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) is a Ghanaian international film festival dedicated to promoting the film business, supporting independent filmmakers, developing audiences, and connecting African cinema with the world.
First held in 2015, BSIFF has grown into a platform for film exhibition, industry conversations, education, cultural exchange, and audience engagement. As it enters its 11th edition in 2026, the festival continues to create space for important conversations about the future of African cinema.
More Than a Film Festival
BSIFF is more than a platform for screening films.
Over the years, the festival has brought together filmmakers, industry professionals, creatives, and audiences through screenings, industry discussions, educational activities, and cultural exchange.
At the center of its work is a broader question: What will it take to build a stronger, more sustainable film industry in Ghana and across Africa?
That focus has also connected BSIFF with important developments within Ghana’s contemporary film ecosystem.
The process that eventually led to the establishment of Ghana’s National Film Authority was announced on the BSIFF platform. BSIFF Founder Juliet Asante was subsequently appointed to establish the Authority and serve as its founding Chief Executive.
The festival has also maintained longstanding engagement with UNESCO Ghana, including participation in conversations around the development and potential of Africa’s film and audiovisual industries.
These connections reflect BSIFF’s broader interest in strengthening the structures, opportunities, and conversations that can support African cinema.

Building the Future of African Cinema
For BSIFF, a thriving film industry needs more than talented filmmakers and quality productions. It needs audiences, sustainable businesses, opportunities, investment, and strong creative communities.

These ideas come together in the theme for its 11th edition: “Film & Global Culture: The New Wave of African Cinema.”
The theme reflects a vision of African cinema that remains rooted in the continent’s languages and cultures while building audiences at home and reaching confidently across borders.
It also recognizes the changing technologies and creative practices influencing how African stories are developed, produced, and experienced.
The Black Star Experience
The 11th edition of BSIFF takes place from September 24–27, 2026, at Golden Eagle Cinemas in Kumasi, Ghana.
With the Official Selection announced, the festival will introduce audiences to the individual films, filmmakers, conversations, and experiences that will make up the 2026 edition.
For film lovers, BSIFF offers an opportunity to experience African cinema beyond the screen and join a wider conversation about where the industry is headed.
From independent filmmakers and emerging creative voices to industry professionals and audiences, the festival provides a meeting point for stories, ideas, and opportunities.
