La Pleasure Beach demolition

Demolition has begun at the La Pleasure Beach in Accra, with a heavy presence of soldiers and police personnel at the facility as residents, workers, and businesses scramble to retrieve their belongings.

The exercise is being carried out as a joint operation involving personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service.

According to a worker at the facility, security personnel arrived at about 4:00 a.m. and instructed people at the premises to leave. He said the demolition began roughly 15 minutes after they were ordered to vacate.

Several structures have already been completely pulled down, while others have been partially demolished. Workers and residents have been seen clearing rubble and debris while attempting to recover belongings from the affected areas.

The strong security presence has also restricted access to sections where demolition has taken place, with soldiers and police personnel supervising the exercise.

Tense Scene at La Pleasure Beach

The demolition has created a tense atmosphere at the popular beach facility, particularly for workers and residents whose livelihoods are connected to the area.

Some people were seen crying as they tried to salvage their belongings from the affected structures.

The worker who spoke to JoyNews said they had received a verbal notice about two weeks earlier but did not expect the demolition to take place so soon.

Demolition Follows Land Dispute

The exercise follows weeks of controversy over the future of the La Pleasure Beach.

Management of the facility had previously rejected a directive to vacate the premises, citing an ongoing court dispute over ownership of the land.

As the demolition continues, workers and residents remain focused on recovering their belongings while security personnel maintain control of the affected areas.
